CSx Via Technical Details

How it works

The CSx Via streams live video over Wi-Fi to a companion app running on Android, iOS, or Windows. With iOS and Android the experience is seamless:

  • The Via’s always-on Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) radio is active anytime a power source is present (i.e. even when the unit is OFF)
  • When the app is open the device name is displayed courtesy of BLE (no need to Pair the device)
  • When the user taps on the device name, the BLE chip powers the Via ON and sets up the Wi-Fi connection
  • Power management is fully automatic, you never need to touch the Via’s Power key (see below)
  • Although fully compatible with Windows the experience is less seamless (see below)

Compatible apps

  • Android and iOS – HQx Live and HQx (new app in Beta testing)
  • HQ – Windows

Connecting to an app

HQx Live (iOS) – BLE is used to boot the unit and set up the Wi-Fi connection, all within the app

  • Open the app, tap to connect
  • The unit boots; Wi-Fi connects and you’re prompted to join the Via’s Wi-Fi network
  • After a few seconds the video stream starts
  • The first time you use the app you must give it permission to connect to devices on your network; if you don’t, the Local Network permission is turned OFF and you can’t connect

HQx Live (Android) – similar to iOS but you leave the app to connect Wi-Fi

  • Open the app, tap to connect
  • The unit boots; HQx Live opens your phone’s Wi-Fi settings and prompts you to connect
  • After connecting you can return to HQx Live
  • After 15 – 30 seconds you may see a warning that the connected device doesn’t have Wi-Fi access and a list of choices (may vary between devices and can be confusing)
    • Choose the option that keeps you connected to the CSx Via
    • One of the Samsung options is “Allow Switch”, which switches from the Via to a different Wi-Fi network; “Allow once” keeps you connected
  • After connecting the video stream starts

HQ (Windows) – the experience may vary depending on the hardware and version of Windows in use.

  • Behavior on a 2021 Surface Pro running Windows 10 Pro:
    • Initial setup:
      • Power the Via using its keypad
      • After booting pair with the Via’s Bluetooth
      • Select the Via’s Wi-Fi network
    • After initial setup:
      • Power the Via using its keypad
      • ~20 seconds after booting the Via shows up in HQ (New Job > Live Video > Connections); selecting the Via establishes a Wi-Fi connection
  • If you’re running VPN software it needs to be off; Connect Tunnel (SeeScan VPN) disconnects the Via’s Wi-Fi in favor of a network with internet access
  • On some systems you must manually connect Wi-Fi each use (you can always do this if Bluetooth is slow to connect)
  • Automatic power management (see below) is iffy at best; sometimes it works, mostly it does not and in most cases the CSx Via needs to be manually powered ON and OFF from its keypad

Automatic power management (Android and iOS)

When used with Android or iOS, power management is fully automatic:

  • When the app is on screen: unit is fully ON and fully functional
  • When the app is not on screen (device closed/locked, different app in use): the Via beeps and enters low power mode
    • Camera lights and video turn off, distance count is retained
    • System is powered and ready to instantly resume operation
    • Remains in low power mode for 60 minutes, then powers OFF (BLE stays on)
