Static Discharge Precaution

Electrostatic discharge (ESD) is the release of static electricity when two objects come into contact – static shock from touching a metal doorknob, for example. When handling electronic components take care to prevent static discharge, which can melt semiconductors and other tiny parts or, in less severe cases, cause a device to function erratically or shorten its life.


Antistatic wrist straps and antistatic mats with grounding straps can prevent static discharge when working on electronics. Kits like this one on Amazon include a mat and grounding straps:
